Indie Design Spotlight – Fandom

That’s right, nerds, this one is for you. Today’s spotlight is mashing up all things I geek out on. So, come on Browncoats! Grab your wands, hop in the Tardis, and watch out for Cylons and pineapples, because Winter is Coming.

Doctor Who

There are 2 kinds of people in the world – those who think number 10 is the best, and those who are wrong.

Don’t Blink Illusion Scarf (Doctor Who) by Karen Robinson

Copyright Karen Robinson

Yarn Weight: Worsted
Amount: 600 – 880 yards
Why I love it: Ok, for starters, it’s an illusion scarf, so it looks striped when looked straight on (like when you look directly at a Weeping Angel it’s a statue, amirite?!) and at an angle it warns you not to blink! And also, the designer found an actual Weeping Angel for her photo shoot. I can only assume she’s now in 1965 trying to find her way home.

Socks For Ten (Doctor Who Inspired Socks) by C.C. Almon

Copyright C.C. Almon / JavaPurl Designs

Yarn Weight: Fingering
Amount: 462 yards
Why I love it: Inspired by the colors and patterns of David Tennant’s version of the Doctor. Also, sonic screwdriver. Also, also, see my note above about number 10.

Bad Wolf Bay by Ruth Brasch

Copyright Amanda Swiger, Swiger Photography

Yarn Weight: Aran
Amount: 457 – 1143 yards
Why I love it: Inspired by the landscape of Bad Wolf Bay and designed for Rose Tyler – I can totally see her wearing it!

Allons-y by Dana Gervais

Copyright Dana Gervais

Yarn Weight: Worsted
Amount: 250 – 276 yards
Why I love it: It’s bigger on the inside! No seriously, it’s a pouch that folds out into a larger bag!!

Harry Potter

Oh, is it still unclear that I’m a huge Harry Potter nerd? See here and here to clear that up.

Tracery by Kathleen Sperling

Copyright The Unofficial Harry Potter Knits

Yarn Weight: Fingering
Amount: 960 – 1344 yards
Why I love it: It has the definite feel of Hogwarts, but is beautiful even if you’re not a Potter fan.

Venomous Tentacula by Jennifer Dassau

Copyright Jennifer Dassau

Yarn Weight: Light Fingering
Amount: 150 – 800 yards
Why I love it: The vine-like edging is super cool and really looks like a moving magical plant.

Christmas Morning Vest by Jennie Santopietro

Copyright A Lovely Homemade Life Designs

Yarn Weight: Worsted
Amount: 160 – 1250 yards
Why I love it: You know you’ve always wanted to knit a Christmas vest for everyone in your family, a la Mrs. Weasley.

Game of Thrones

I managed to avoid all spoilers for GOT for 5 years, and then binge watched it all. Why not knit a Thrones inspired project while you patiently wait for the new season?

Mother of Dragons by Lara Smoot

Copyright Lara Smoot

Yarn Weight: Fingering
Amount: 360 yards
Why I love it: It’s a dragon wing!

Dracarys by Ela Torrente

Copyright Ela Torrente

Yarn Weight: Sport
Amount: 840 – 1580 yards
Why I love it: It’s clearly inspired by the stories (the name comes from the books and means “Dragon fire”), but it’s also so chic and wearable!

Queen of the Seven Kingdoms by Michele DuNaier

Copyright Michele DuNaier

Yarn Weight: Light Fingering
Amount: 800 – 900 yards
Why I love it: 1. It’s super pretty. 2. Go read the description – it’s amazing.

“You heard about Pluto? That’s messed up, right?” -Ghee Buttersnaps

I’ve Heard It Both Ways by Kassie Moody

Copyright Kassie Moody

Curse you Netflix for taking it down! Now I want to watch it again!

Starbuck by Dieuwke van Mulligen

Copyright Dieuwke van Mulligen

Yarn Weight: Fingering
Amount: 900 – 1400 yards
Why I love it: Pop on some aviators and dogtags and this is Kara Thrace’s civvies.

Firefly

Okay, I went through all 5000+ discounted patterns looking for the other Firefly fans, and found only 1 other design besides my series! So my nerdy sister in arms, C.C. Almon, gets 2 designs spotlighted!

Also, I Can Kill You With My Brain Socks (Firefly) by C.C. Almon

Copyright JavaPurl Designs / C.C. Almon

Big Damn Heroes by Kimberly Golynskiy

Copyright Kimberly Golynskiy

Yarn Weight: Fingering
Amount: 700 – 924 yards

The Ambassador by Kimberly Golynskiy

Copyright Kimberly Golynskiy

Yarn Weight: Fingering
Amount: 900 – 1100 yards
Why I love it: It’s so fancy and special – definitely something a companion would have in her wardrobe.

Leaf on the Wind by Kimberly Golynskiy

Copyright Kimberly Golynskiy

Yarn Weight: Fingering
Amount: 740 – 1000 yards
Why I love it: It combines a leaf motif (from Wash’s quote “I am a leaf on the wind, watch how I soar”, sob!) and a modified version of cables from his super sweet cable knit sweater from the series.

Wasn’t Born a Shepherd by Kimberly Golynskiy

Copyright Kimberly Golynskiy

Yarn Weight: Bulky
Amount: 770 – 800 yards
Why I love it: The strap is fully reversible and has a pattern with stylized crosses to help you in your mission to bring “religiosity to the fuzzy-wuzzies.”
