As part of the original Around the World in 80 Skeins tour, Vietnam was our 33rd stop, to visit crochet designer Maz Kwok.

Hi, Maz Kwok – welcome to the tour! Let’s start with where are you from?
I’m from Ho Chi Minh city, Viet Nam. Being a mixed blood in a multicultural city is fun.

What’s the best thing about where you live?
Everything is at your fingertips in this city. I like to hang around, enjoy good food and beautiful landscape and would love to show friends how to enjoy it.

How did you get started crocheting and why did it turn into designing?
I picked up a crochet hook in June 2012, tried to make some chains and seems I can’t stop crocheting then. As an avid crafter, I tend to create something of my own so designing is just the result. Gradually, I learned to blog and improved my crochet skill via blogging and designing.

How does where you live influence your designs?
I’m inspired from every good thing around, music, nature, colors…In this multicultural city, where old and new architecture combine in a friendly environment, the inspirational source is endless.

Where is your favorite place to crochet and design?
My own room – studio. =) Sometimes it’s quite messy, just like any crafter’s place.

Do you have a favorite local yarn store?
In my place, yarn can be bought easily from malls or markets. However, there’s a local yarn store in the city where I can find popular yarn brand like Lion brand and Red heart yarn…It’s called Lena Faustina.

Who are your favorite designers?
This is a hard question, I can spend hours admiring great projects of other designers.

What is your design process like? Do you plan it all out before you pick up your needles/hook, or do you let the yarn show you where to go?
Both ways work for me. I may choose the stitches, colors, hook size, yarn type carefully before starting a new project. Sometimes I let the fun lead me, just choose my favorite yarn and go.

Is there a big knitting/crochet culture where you live?
I’m not aware of a big knitting/crochet culture in my place. However, many types of fiber art can be found here. I also saw such unique crochet art like crocheted traditional Vietnamese dress. In other regions where the weather is cold like Dalat or Hanoi, yarn art is more popular.

What is your favorite drink while working?
I always make myself some hot drink, coffee with milk or honey lemon tea.

Do you have a favorite design in your portfolio that was inspired by your culture/environment?
My lately favourite design is the Shawl cir-collar vest with both retro and modern styles. It’s easy to pair with other outfits.
